Discover if your ancestor served time in an Irish gaol between 1790 and 1924. In the surviving records of prisons across Ireland you can find the stories of more than 3 million people. Was your ancestor a villainous rogue or a victim of circumstances? Search the Irish Prison Registers and find out.
Each record contains an image and a transcript of the original register. The information varies considerably depending on prison and date but you could find out the following about your ancestor:
Name
Address
Age
Place of birth
Occupation
Education
Religion
Physical description
Next of kin
Details of crime, including the name of the victim
Sentence
Dates of admission and release (or death)
Please note that since some prisons took in prisoners from the entire country, the county the prison is in may not be your ancestor’s home county.
