POLICE FORCE.
NEW SUPERINTENDENT.
Superintendent Michael Hannan, who
was recently promoted from the rank of
Inspector to that of Superintendent,
was born In Limerick, Ireland, on Au-
gust 21, 1851. He came to Victoria
when about 14 years of age.
In 1871 he joined the Victorian Per-
manent Artillery, and was subsequently
transferred to the police force. He was
made senior constable in 1890, and, after
being stationed In various parts of the
State, Including South Yarra and Col-
llngwood, was promoted to the rank of
sub-inspector in 1901. The next step
to an inspectorship was made In 1907.
He was placed In charge of tho Ben-
digo district, where he has remained up
to the present time.
While stationed as a constable at
Warrnambool, Superintendent Hannan
saved a man from drowning, and was
presented with the Royal Humane So-
ciety's certificate and bronze medal.
Superintendent Hannan will retire from
the service on August 21 next.
